The winners of the first Tanzania Digital Awards (TDA) 2020 have officially been announced. A total of 50 digital champions have won 50 subcategories from nine (9) main categories including, Digital Governance, Digital Diplomacy, Digital Marketing, Digital Entertainment, Digital Media, Digital Innovation, Digital Communication, Digital Advocacy and The People's Choice Award.
Diamond Platnumz and Millard Ayo have emerged overall winner as the two bagged three awards each. Diamond Platnumz has won the people’s choice award, the influencer of the year and best digital artist while Millard Ayo has taken Digital Media Leader of the Year, Best online TV and Blog of the year.
Two entities, Ubongo Kids and Tanzania Immigration Department, have emerged with two awards each. Ubongo Kids grabbed the best educational page and best EdTech app while Tanzania Immigration department won the best government agency on digital and the innovation of the year award for its newly introduced electronic passport registration system.
Vodacom Tanzania has bagged two awards, one for its M-PESA App as the Best FinTech App and the other for its digital marketing campaign dubbed Yajayo Yanafurahisha (the future is exciting) as the Best Digital Marketing Campaign.
The honorary award for the Digital Media Leader has gone to the legendary blogger - Muhidin Issa Michuzi.
After unveiling the list of winners, Mr Genos Martin, the Head of Programs, Research and Innovation for Serengeti Bytes, said to a large extent the Awards were affected by the outbreak of COVID-19 Pandemic in the country because the outbreak came few weeks after the launch of the awards. However, Mr Martin said that the COVID-19 had put emphasis on the importance of digital technology on our daily lives, and this makes The Tanzania Digital Awards more relevant.
"Soon after we launched the Tanzania Digital Awards in January this year, we received massive support from the public, corporates, the government, and all other stakeholders. They were all ready to participate in the success of the awards until the interruption by Covid-1. Despite the disruption, on the other hand, the corona has helped us all to understand the importance of embracing the digital technologies as we dive into a new normal.” - said Mr Martin.
Speaking about the winners, Mr Martin said, all the winners are merited, looking at the impact they are making in the society through effective use of digital platforms. Martin added that next year the awards will expand to cover more sectors with a view of stimulating creativity and innovation for enhanced growth and development of the digital technology in Tanzania.
"We congratulate all the winners in all categories, looking at their efforts and impact they are making on digital - all of them are well deserved. We believe this recognition will inspire more actors and citizens to drive positive change in the country through the effective use of digital technology. In the next awards, we will make sure more stakeholders are well informed so that they can fully participate".

Established on 16th January 2020, the Tanzania Digital Awards extend recognition to individuals and organizations who makes effective use of digital platforms to creatively and innovatively inspire actions, bring change and foster lasting impact across and beyond the online community.
During its first year, Tanzania Digital Awards attracted more than 54,034 nominations and over 100,000 votes for nominees in 50 categories.
